Accidental Demon Slayers: Daughter of Darkness pt. 3

Clare had been surprised when Max had called, mostly because she didn’t remember giving out him her number.  Still, hearing his voice again hadn’t really been all that bad.

“So, I have something that might interest you.”  He sounded as smarmy as ever.

“If it’s another night with the Max Meister, I’ve done my charity work this year.”  Clare did her best to keep it cool.  Hard to get worked for her, and in Max’s case, she wasn’t going to make it easy.

“Wow, ouch!”  He laughed.  “No, this is work related.”

“Max, I’m not going to put my company on your TV show.”  She sighed.  He had proposed the idea a few times during the conference after their little run in with the succubus, and she had shot him down every time.

“Even if this is right up your alley?”  He was roping her in.  “I’m not pulling your leg here, Clare.  This is the real deal.  Right in your wheelhouse.  Honest to God demonic, and possible cult, activity.”

He had her hooked.  “So, what it is it?”

“You ever hear of Fantasy Land?”

She had.  It was an old theme park about two hours north of Chicago.  She had been there a few times as a child, and even then the place was run down and creepy.

“Well, apparently they’ve had some odd occurrences on one of their rides.  The Fantasy Land Cruise.”  He paused, and Clare could hear the sound of papers shuffling on the other end.  “Apparently a couple from the local college went missing after they broke into the park one night.   Security footage shows them taking one of the boats, and taking it for a late night cruise.”

Clare remembered the ride Max was talking about.  It was constructed around a real river and lake in the area, and featured scenes from a small elf village played out in the surrounding woods.  The centerpiece was the Elf Temple, a giant, almost Aztec looking structure in the middle of the lake.  Even as a child Clare had thought the temple had looked out of place, but other people seemed to love it.

“Well, when they got to the temple they opted for a little late night swim, and…” Max paused for effect.

“And what?”  Clare didn’t have time for his theatrics.

“And the security cameras cut out.  All of them.  Five in total,  in the Elf Temple lake alone.   When they come back on the couple is gone, the boat is back in the dock, and any trace that they had even been there is gone.”   He paused. “There was one thing, though.”

“Max, cut with the dramatic pauses, please.”  She was getting frustrated.  “We aren’t cutting to commercial here.”

“Sorry, habit.”  He laughed.  “There were traces of demonic residue on the temple, and one of the elf figures.”

“Demonic residue? You mean tentacle slime.”  She couldn’t stand technical terms.

“Bingo.” Another dramatic pause.  “So, are you in?”

“Tell me when and were.”

“Perfect.”

Accidental Demon Slayers: Daughter of Darkness pt. 2

Kurt stood in the kitchen, his hands resting on the counter, his head hung low.  He had never seen Bobby act like this before.  He knew that what Grath had done to him, to the both of them, and gotten to him, but it had never been like Bobby to completely shut down like this.

For the first week after the battle Bobby had seemed okay, but slowly Kurt had watched him withdraw, and now he wasn’t even getting out of bed.  It was like that whole battle had just ripped the soul right out of him.

Kurt got it.  He understood what Bobby was going through.  He had been on the business end of Grath’s tentacles himself, and it wasn’t a pleasant experience.  It was something he struggled with every day, but he moved past it.  He knew he had to.

“Is there anything to eat?”  Bobby stood in the doorway to the kitchen.  His hair was an unwashed mess, and he was wearing the same pajamas that he had put on three days ago.

“I haven’t gone shopping.”  Kurt couldn’t help it.  He smiled.  Sure, his boyfriend looked like hell, but at least he was up and moving.  That was a step in the right direction.  “I can, though.  What do you need?”

“I’ll go.”  Bobby scratched his head, glancing around the room.  “I need to get out, I think.”

Kurt walked over to him, wrapping his arms around Bobby.  Gently he leaned down, kissing him on the forehead.

“Take a shower first, okay?”  Kurt smiled, looking into Bobby’s eyes.

“That bad?”  Bobby let out a half-hearted laugh.

“Worse.”  Kurt kissed him.

Ashtyn sat behind her desk, keeping her focus on the computer screen.  She had never expected her inner goddess to be so talkative, and since she hadn’t yet mastered the art of responding with her thoughts instead of her voice, communication wasn’t very easy.

She hadn’t told anyone about Tabitha yet.  She didn’t really know how to bring up the subject.  How do you explain that a brand new, never before seen goddess just pops up in your mind?

“Well, you tell them about the Scribes.”  Tabitha’s voice rang through Ashtyn’s head.

“What the hell are the Scribes?”  Ashtyn spoke out loud, and did a quick double check to make sure that no one was around to hear her.

“The Scribes are…” Tabitha paused.  “Well, I don’t really know.  I mean, I know they made me.  They’re the reason my mother and father are still around, as well.  So, I guess you could say that the scribes are god makers.”

God Makers?  The more she learned, the less she understood.

“Can I ask you something?”  Tabitha’s voice was soft, inquisitive.  Even though she looked like a grown woman, she had a very limited grasp on the world and people.

“Sure.”  Ashtyn’s voice was a low whisper.

“Why do you think about sex all the time?”

Ashtyn nearly fell out of her chair.  Her goddess was going through all her personal thoughts, too?  How did Bobby deal with this?  Maybe Juktha understood privacy, or at least had the good sense not to ask questions.

“People have needs, and when those needs aren’t being met, they tend to think about them more.”  Ashtyn could feel her face growing hot.

“Who are you talking to?”  Clare’s voice made Ashtyn jump.

Ashtyn turned in her chair, facing her boss.  “No one!  Myself.  I, um, was just thinking something out loud.”

“Sure.”  Clare gave her an odd look.  “Listen, I just got a call about a possible case, and I was wondering if you could hold down the office for a little while.  Brittany and I are going to go check it out.”

Brittany?  Really?

“Yes, I know she’s green, but how is she ever going to learn if we don’t get her out there?”  Clare seemed to read Ashtyn’s thoughts.

“Yeah, I can handle things here.”  Ashtyn smiled, trying to hide the nervousness in her voice.  “You two have fun.”

“Fun… right.”  Clare gave her a wink, and headed back to her office.

Once Ashtyn was alone again, she took a deep breath.  That was too close.  She needed to first, figure out the whole talking mentally thing, and second, she had to figure out the best way to explain Tabitha to everyone.

“You could just tell them.”  Tabitha chimed in again.

“It’s not that easy!”  Ashtyn answered her back without even thinking.  “Also, we need to have a little talk about privacy and boundaries.”

“Privacy?”

Ashtyn could feel her jaw tighten.  This was going to be a rough transition.

Accidental Demon Slayers: Daughter of Darkness pt. 1

When Clare had returned from the conference, she had expected to come back to the same old, same old.  Instead, she had found her office completely changed.  Bobby was hardly ever around, Ashtyn was keeping to herself, and Brittany… well, Brittany seemed to be the only constant.

The young, beautiful demon sat across from Clare, a desk the only thing between them.  The girl was fuming.

“Why is it that everyone else gets to go out, and have their adventures, and I get stuck here in the office?  I did paperwork, Clare.  For weeks.”  Brittany’s pretty face was bright red.

Clare sighed.  How was she supposed to explain to Brittany, again, that customer service was still a part of their job?  They still had to be able to handle people.  Brittany didn’t understand the importance of creating an emotional connection with a client, even if their problem seemed ridiculous.

“I will let you out into the field when I think you’re ready.”  Clare sighed, leaning back in her chair.

Her brief fling with Max West had been relaxing, but the glow from that tryst was already starting to wear off.  She needed things to go back to normal.  She needed to feel like her office was hers, again.

“When I’m ready?”  Brittany stood up, slamming her hands on the desk.  “I’m a demon, damn it!  Who better to slay demons then an actual demon?”

She couldn’t argue with her there.

“Listen…” Clare paused, making sure she was really ready to say what she was about to say.  “How about on the next case, you and I take the lead?  It’ll be your trial run.”

She really didn’t believe that Brittany was ready, but the rest of the team didn’t seem to be in fighting shape either.  At least Brittany had a drive.

Brittany stood up straight, crossing her arms.  She narrowed her eyes, her gaze glued to Clare.  “You mean it?”

“Sure.” Clare began to rub her forehead.  She could feel a migraine coming on.

“Alright then.”  Brittany nodded. “Next case.”

“Next case.”

“You aren’t going to pull a fast one on me, are you?”

Clare shook her head.

“Good.” Brittany turned, and left the office.

Clare closed her eyes, almost instantly regretting the decision she had just made.  Brittany was strong, smart, fierce… but she was also quick to act, slow to think.  She ran on pure emotion.  Still, how was she ever going to be ready to work a case if all she was doing was paperwork?

As Clare began to work her temples she hoped that the next case was something simple.  A tentacle demon loose on a college campus would be nice and simple.

Somehow, though, she knew that it wasn’t going to be that easy.  It never was.

About Accidental Demon Slayers: Daughter of Darkness

So begins a new Arc in the Accidental Demon Slayers Serials.  I'm not going to give much away here, but I can tell you a few things.

First off, this story will focus on the Demon Slayers Inc. crew.  Right now the story is focused mostly on Brittany and Clare, and will tie the Clare and the Ghost Hunter serial into the Grath storyline from Experiments in Darkness.  Don't worry, though.  Bobby, Kurt and Ashtyn will have a part in the story as well, and some of the plot threads from the last story that were kind of left dangling will be addressed here, and will play an important role in the new arc.

I chose Clare and Brittany to take the lead on this one because they, at least in my mind, are the least developed of the Accidental Demon Slayers cast, and I really want to round out the group more.  Both characters have interesting backstories, and I want to use this Arc as a chance to explore their history a bit more.

Now, the big question is, who is the Daughter of Darkness?  Guess you guys will just have to read to find out!

*News*

I hope you guys enjoyed the first arc of the Accidental Demon Slayers serials!  Don't worry, there will be more to come.

While I am chugging along on the game, I am also going to school, and working.  So, while the game is taking longer than planned, it is still happening.  The serials will continue, and I'm working out the next storyline, Daughter of Darkness.  That will actually be starting next week.

As much as I would love to devote all my time to my game and the ADS world, real life does tend to take over.  So, to everyone who has been following so far, THANK YOU!

Accidental Demon Slayers: Experiments in Darkness pt. 26 *Arc Ending*

That night I found myself waking up in that familiar room.  Juktha’s room.

It looked almost exactly the same as it had before, except now, it was night. The only illumination was the silver moonlight streaming through a pair of open double doors on the far end that led out to a balcony.  As I walked towards the doors I could feel a cool breeze brush against my face.

I stepped through the doors, and out onto the balcony. I had never been to this part of Juktha’s room before.  For all I knew, it was brand new.  It was stunning, though.  Constructed of rich, polished marble, the balcony overlooked an endless, calm ocean.  If I had been in a better mood I would have enjoyed it.

At that very moment, though, I wanted to be anywhere but there.

I spotted Juktha leaning against the stone railing that lined the edge of the balcony.  Much to my surprise, standing next to her was Kurt.

“Took you long enough.”  He looked at me and smiled.

“It was kind of hard to get my mind to quiet down enough for me to get to sleep.”  I glanced at Juktha as I spoke.

She looked like I felt.  Beat up, defeated.  She looked violated.  She couldn’t meet my eyes, and instead focused on her clasped hands, which she held over her chest.

“Hell of a day, right?”  Kurt turned, looking out at the ocean.  “So this is where you two go to construct all your battle plans.  I never thought I would see this place.”

“I’m glad you’re enjoying it.”  I bit my bottom lip.  The last person who deserved to be snapped at was Kurt.  He had been through just as much as I had.  Hell, he should be mad at me.  Furious, even.  Instead he was calm, smiling.

I wanted to shake him.  I wanted to scream at him, and make him angry.  I wanted him to hate me for what I had dragged him in to.  I wanted... I wanted him to be safe, and today just proved that I couldn’t always make that happen.

“Why am I here?”  I looked away from Kurt, back at Juktha.

She finally looked up at me.  “I am sorry.”  Tears rimmed her lower eye lids.  “I should have known... I should have been prepared.”

“How could you?”  Kurt turned towards her, placing a hand on her shoulder.  “How could any of us?  We are learning all of this as we go.  We just need to be glad that, in the end, we got out of there alive.”

“Thanks to Ashtyn.”  I hated how bitter those words sounded.  I had to admit to myself that it hurt not to be the hero this time.  The fact that I was being so shallow made me even more angry.  “How did that work, any ways?  I could barely move after Grath drained your power, and yet the power drain didn’t seem to have any effect on her.”

“We were actually just talking about that.”  Juktha glanced at Kurt.  “I think... I think we might be seeing the birth of a new goddess in Ashtyn.  Possibly Kurt as well.”

“A new... how the hell does that even work?”  I bit my tongue, stopping the anger from spilling out from between my lips.

“Grath had mentioned that if we, as deities, had been truly forgotten, we would have ceased to exist.”  She took a deep breath.  “I think that whatever groups are still worshiping us... I think they are changing our story, and they are making you and your friends a part of it.”

“How would they know that?”  I walked towards the balcony, resting my hands on the cool stone.  “How would they know that you and I are joined?  Or that Kurt and Ashtyn are part of this?”

“They’re watching us.”  Kurt stood next to me, close enough where I could feel his warmth on his skin.  “Not just the three of us, but Clare and Brittany as well.  Maybe even Matt and Amanda, Felicia, the kids at the school.  They are watching us, and creating a new history for Juktha and the other gods.”

As what Kurt and Juktha were telling me sunk in I could feel my anger building again, and my fear.  Now I had a group of people, strangers, stepping in and taking control of my life?

I started to feel sick.

“We need to find them, Bobby.”  Juktha’s voice was soft, calm.

“They already know who we are.”  I focused on the ocean, on the sweet, salty smell that drifted from the rolling waves.  I tried to calm myself down.  “Why don’t they just reveal themselves?”

“Maybe they’re scared.  Mabye they don’t think we are ready, or they aren’t sure, but I’m getting the feeling we may have to make the first move here.”  Kurt rested his hand on the small of my back.  “All of us do.”

“And what about Grath’s followers?”  I closed my eyes, cringing at the sound of that monster’s name.  “What do we do about them?”

“We need to find them, and stop them.”  Juktha took a deep breath, “and I think I know where they might be headed.”

“Where?”  I turned, looking at Juktha.

“Grath’s temple.”  She shuddered.  “It still stands. It hasn’t been used for years, at least not as a temple, but it still stands.  His followers will be making their way there.”

“Then we go there, and we take them out.”  I stepped away from the railing, and turned, walking back towards the double doors.  “We just need to make sure we are ready for that battle, because I do not want a repeat of today.”

I kept walking, not turning, not letting them see the anger and fear, the tears and the humiliation.  I focused on the new mission, on what I needed to accomplish.

The next time I faced Grath, I would make sure to wipe that son of a bitch from existence, and every one of his psychotic followers with him.

***

Ashtyn stood in a small chapel.  The floor was thick, gray stone, the walls arches that looked out over a sea of white clouds.  At the opposite end of the room was a small, stone altar.

Standing in front of the altar was a tall woman, with long, flowing wine red hair, and cocoa skin.  She wore a purple toga style dress that seemed to drape over her lithe, dancer’s body.

How she had gotten to this place, and who that woman was, she had no idea.  She knew she should be alarmed, scared even, but she wasn’t.  In fact, she felt just the opposite.  She was completely, and totally calm.

“Ashtyn?”  The woman’s voice was soft, welcoming.  She took a step away from the altar, and her movements were smooth and graceful.

“Yes.”  Asthyn spoke as if in a trance.  She was hypnotized by the figure in front of her.  “Who are you?”

The woman bowed her head.  “I am Tabitha, daughter of Juktha, and goddess of Purification.”  She raised her head, her beautiful silver eyes meeting Ashtyn’s.  “I have been joined with you.”

Ashtyn stood there, stunned into silence.

“Joined?”  The word came out with a stutter.

“As my mother and Bobby are joined, so are you and I.”  Tabitha smiled.

Ashtyn fainted.

***

The car came to a stop in front of the latched gates.  The headlights bounced off a sign that read “Closed for the Season”.  With a rumble the car’s engine turned off, and the driver’s side door opened.

Elizabeth stepped out, the glass case in her hand.  She looked much different then she had back at the lab.  Gone were the mousy clothes, and coke bottle glasses.  Instead she wore knee high leather boots, zipped up the side, a pair of skin tight jeans, and a leather jacket over a white, spaghetti strap tank top.  Her hair was pulled back into a tight ponytail, and her eyes were covered by a pair of bitch black sunglasses.  The real Elizabeth had emerged.

She walked towards the gates, the stiletto heels of her boots clicking on the pavement with every step.  She glanced up at the giant sign above the gates.

Fantasy Land.

She had been there a few times when she was a child.  It was a budget rate theme park with crappy rides, and creepy decorations.  Yet this is where Grath had wanted her to go.

“Home sweet home?”  She looked down at the glass case, and the spores that were housed inside.

She had been pleased to see the spores had multiplied. A little blood, and suddenly they were filling the container.  More spores meant more possibilities.

“If you say so.”  Elizabeth slid open the lid from the case, and watched as the spores drifted out, and through the rusted bars of the gate.

She turned, walking back towards the car, and slid into the driver’s seat, closing the door behind her.

“You know, Steven, I’m kind of sad to see them go.”  She turned towards Steven’s lifeless corpse that was slumped over in the passenger's seat.  “I feel like a mother bird sending her babies out of the nest and into the world.”

The front of Steven’s shirt was caked with dried blood, and his face was slack jawed and wide eyed.  He hadn’t expected Elizabeth to slit his throat, and he still wore that stupid, shocked expression, even in death. His blood had been very helpful, though.  When Grath had told her that he needed blood to grow, she had almost given him her own, but he had stopped her before she had done anything stupid.  He needed her, but he didn’t need Steven anymore.  Steven had stopped being useful.

“Come on.”  Elizabeth started the car.  “I’ll be back when he’s ready.”  She put the car in reverse, and started down the short driveway towards the main road.

The jolt from the sudden movement sent Steven’s body forward, his head smacking against the dash.  Elizabeth giggled.

She had enjoyed killing Steven.  The fact that it had helped strengthen Grath was just a plus.  As she glanced back at the gates, she couldn’t help but smile at all the fun possibilities that lay ahead of her.

She put the car in drive, and headed back towards Chicago.

“Just have to be patient,” she said to herself.  “Soon, Grath will rise.”

To Be Continued...

Accidental Demon Slayers: Experiments in Darkness pt. 25

We all sat in the lab, still worn out from the fate that had taken place in Megan’s mind.  Kurt was at my side, his hand resting on mine.  His touch calmed me, healed me.  It almost made me forget what had happened to me when I had been too weak to fight Grath.

I shuddered, trying to push the memory from my mind, to bury it away someplace dark and deep and never think of it again, but no matter how hard I tried the sensation of being completely and totally helpless still settled over me like a dark cloud.

“Thank you.”  Megan was sitting across from Kurt and I.  Ashtyn was wrapping a bandage around the cuts on her leg.  “I... I don’t know what I would have done if I had become one of those things.”

“You’re safe now.  We all are.”  Ashtyn finished bandaging Megan, and took a seat next to her.

“You made sure of that.”  Kurt gave Ashtyn a smile.  “Thank you.  You stepped in not a moment too soon.”

“Are we?” I spoke without thinking.

“Are we what?”  Ashtyn looked at me, confused.

“Are we really safe?  You heard what Grath said.  He still has disciples out there, working to make him stronger.”  I took a breath, unable to stop the words from spilling out of my mouth.  “This is much bigger then we ever thought.  This is... this is...”  I buried my head in my hands.

I was exhausted, humiliated.  I just needed to get out of that lab, and back home.  I needed to forget that any of this ever happened.

“Where are Steven and Elizabeth?  Where’s Doctor Duguard?”  Megan was looking around the lab.  “You would think they would have seen us wake up on the security monitors by now.”

I looked at Kurt.  A chill ran down my spine.

***

We found Dr. Duguard in her office, propped up in her chair, her chest cut open.  Written on the wall behind her, in what appeared to be her own blood, were the words “Grath shall rise.”

After that Megan checked the security footage, and what I saw made my blood run cold.  Steven and Elizabeth had walked out of this lab with one of the spores.  They had taken a part of that... that bastard with them, out into the world.

The rage that built up inside of me was almost uncontrollable.  Not only had I let that son of a bitch get the upper hand on me, I hadn’t been able to keep him contained.  All because my power was so reliant on someone else.

Without Juktha I was nothing, and when it came to Grath, I was powerless because she was powerless.

I wanted to scream.
