Eye See You: Randy pt. 20

Luke slept at his place.

We had been together for almost two weeks straight, but he needed to take care of some stuff at his place.

With Luke gone, my mind went back into overdrive.

How can I fix this?  How can I make this stop?

Bella hadn’t said anything, but I could see the fear in her eyes.

It was probably the same fear that Janelle had seen in me that day in class, before she…

I want to call Luke, to make sure he’s okay.  Normally I would worry that this would make me seem clingy, and maybe it does, but consider the circumstances…
He picked up after the first ring.

The sound of his voice calmed my mind.

There was no video that night. No new messages.

I still didn’t sleep.

Ruins pt. 2

The sun is bright, harsh, glaring off the stripped metal and shattered glass.

I venture out only during the day.  My sister, Shana, stays behind.

She’s weak.  Most of the people in my “village” are weak.

Food is scarce.
Clean water a dream.

The creatures don’t come out during the day, so myself and the other ones, the ones who adapted, are free to forage.

At first there was plenty, but now the stores have been picked clean.

Some have tried to garden, with little success.

I risk the shell of the city so that my sister can make it through another day.

Eye See You: Randy pt. 19

On the fifth day, Luke kissed me, and it was good.  It felt normal.  It felt like something I should be doing, and it made my heart beat in my chest, and my mind went silent, and…

And on the sixth day we got the new list.

Luke.
Amy.
Randy.
Dina.

Bella.

My mouth went dry when I saw the picture.

“Do you know her?”

…

She’s my best friend.

Letters from the Dead pt. 5

“It’s Tommy.  He left a note in my locker.”

“Did he threaten you?”

“No…”

“Then why would this letter require you to bring a three inch blade into the school?”

“It was from Tommy DeMarco.”

The name set off an alarm in my mind, and yet I couldn’t instantly place…

Tommy DeMarco.  I suddenly remembered.
He had died. It was a drunk driving incident two years ago.

Do you remember our prom?

Felicia, I’m coming back, just for you.

Letters from the Dead pt. 4

I pushed the letters from my mind.

Wheaton Prep, the students, my real life, needed my attention.
I loved my job, and my love was reflected in the devotion to my duties.

Sure, I was just assistant principal, but I was also the one who handled all the day-to-day bullshit that went on in a high school.

One part of that day-to-day bullshit was dealing with students, specifically the ones who didn’t like to play by the rules.

Like the young man who sat across from me.

Sebastian.

His blue hair and piercings violated the dress code.
I didn’t really care.
The kid had the mouth of a sailor.
I couldn’t judge.

The kid had brought a knife to school.
That I couldn’t let slide.

Eye See You: Randy pt. 18

There were no messages for the next four days.  No pictures. No new lists.

I kept seeing Luke.

I liked him.
I think he liked me.
We didn’t really talk about it, but it was there.
A positive in a vast ocean of ever increasing negatives.

We did talk about the video though.

How that man had moved, risen off the ground on his own. Floated.  At least, that’s how it looked.

“Could be a ghost.”

Luke said it so matter of factly. It could be a ghost.

Maybe it could be.
