While Nora played, Doug
went to go look for more food.
Kay and I stayed behind
at the playground, keeping watch.
“I have two boys.”
Kay sounded different.
She sounded softer.
“I remember when they
were here age. I miss those days.”
I ask her where her boys are now.
“They live with their dad
in Iowa.”
She shakes her head.
“I wonder if things are
different there.”
Maybe they are.
A part of me knows I’m
lying to her, but the other part, the smaller, hopeful part, was wishing that
it was true.
