After brief
introductions, Alana leads us down what had once been Ogden Avenue, but was now
nothing more then a densely wooded, gravel path.
A mighty forest, she
explained, had overtaken the whole area.
The trees and growth
supplied them not only food, but also protection.
The demons never ventured
past Downer’s Grove.
The forests covered
several towns, with Wheaton at its center.
Aurora to the west, and
most of Naperville to the south, were wastelands, but the Forest, as she called
it, remained alive and healthy.
They people who lived
here barely ventured out, but occasionally they were forced to find food on the
edges, where some demons could still appear.
That explained the
knife.
The walk would only be a
couple of hours until we reached her town.
For the first time in a
long time, I relaxed.
I could sense a calm in
Kay as well.
It was Doug who still had
his guard up.
What did he sense that I
didn’t?
