Missy had decided that getting Gus out of the apartment was
the best idea. The first step in getting
him on the path to true love was to get him out there, meeting people. Well, meeting women, really.
The more she talked to him, the more she realized that Gus
had very little interaction with the opposite sex. Sure, his boss was a woman, but outside of
her, it was just Nando, and Nando didn’t count.
“So, why are we going to my job again?” Gus was walking with
his head hung low, his eyes aimed squarely at his feet.
“I want to meet the major female influence in your life
right now.” Missy did her best to sound
cheerful. She needed to counter act all
the negative mumbo jumbo coming off of Gus.
He was just so… sad looking.
Not cute sad, like a lost puppy, but depressing sad, like a dead
homeless person with a needle in his arm.
He was the kind of sad that made you want to run away because it made
you feel guilty for having it so good.
Missy didn’t think she had it much better than Gus, not
really. She had passed on before she had
ever found her true love, or before she could even have a drunken one-night
stand. In a way, she was jealous of her
project. Sure, he was a sad sack of
hopeless depressing manhood right now, but when she was done with him, he would
be romance novel perfect… and he would most likely get to have sex.
She shook her head.
She was an angel. Angels did not
think about things like sex. She hadn’t
actually thought of sex for a long while, but now, being back on earth,
suddenly she could feel her other worldly hormones starting to kick in. It was odd, and she wasn’t really sure she
liked it.
“Soul is...” Gus looked up for the first time, “well, she’s
interesting.”
“Define interesting?” Missy snaked her arm around Gus’s, and
started picking up the pace. At this
rate they would get to his job in about a week.
“Fun, loud… occasionally violent.” Gus suddenly made an odd face. “You two should actually get along just fine,
now that I think about it. You know,
once she gets past the whole… you know…”
He motioned his hands towards her wings, and then her clothes.
“My what?”
“The fact that you’re an angelic cheerleader.” Gus glanced around. “It’s not exactly commonplace around here.”
Missy looked around, and Gus was right, she stood out. She saw people staring, and a few even ran
across the street. She really did need
to figure out how to make those things go invisible, but at that moment she
didn’t really have much choice. She had
a job to do, awkward looks be damned.
“How much further is it?” Missy gave his arm a squeeze.
“Half a block.” Gus sighed. “I was supposed to be back to
work ten minutes ago. So… just be ready,
because I doubt Soul will be happy. When
she’s not happy, she has a habit of throwing things at me. Like encyclopedias.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll explain everything to her.” Missy
cooed. “She has to understand then,
right?”
Well, Soul hadn’t understood. Instead she had chucked a World Atlas at the
both of them, and called Missy a psychotic cosplayer who needed to get her meds
checked. After she had calmed down,
though, things had seemed to improve quickly.
Soul was in her late thirties, tall, with skin as dark as
night, and thick braids that swung heavy against her back. She was strikingly beautiful, with an hourglass
torso, and long, strong legs. Her dark
brown eyes were locked on Missy, and her lips were pursed in curiosity.
“So, explain to me again what your goal is?” Soul reached
up, sliding her glasses onto her forehead.
“To find him his true love!”
Missy capped it off with a giggle.
That sent Soul into a fit of laughter. It was a laugh so booming that the kids in
the back of the bookstore jumped, and one little girl squeaked in fear.
“Missy, you are going to have your work cut out for you.”
With a smile Soul shook her head.
“Maybe you could be his…” Missy’s wings fluttered.
Soul held up her hand, showing off a bright gold band that
glittered in the overhead lights. “I am
very happily taken. Sorry. You’re going to have to work a little harder
at this one.”
“I had to ask.” Missy shrugged.
“You okay with this plan, Gussy?” Soul gave Gus’s shoulder a
gentle tap. “Dream Date, Angel Edition
doesn’t really strike me as your kind of game.”
“I guess…” Gus’s face was beat red.
Missy caught something in the way Soul looked at Gus. It wasn’t attraction, but something
else. It was a kind of protective,
almost sisterly glint in her eye. She
had seen something similar in the way Nando had looked at him.
She smiled. She
couldn’t help it. Sure, Gus wasn’t a
master at love, but he had people in his corner. She had a feeling that having people who
loved in like family would be one of the greatest assets in her quest.
“So, what kind of woman is he looking for?” Soul was looking
at Missy now.
“Well, I… I don’t know.” She suddenly felt like the biggest idiot in
the whole world.
How could she plan on finding Gus the love of his life if
she had no idea what kind of person he was actually looking to fall in love with?
“Guess that’s step one.” Soul ushered them both back towards
her office. “Come on, if we’re going to
do this, we are going to do it right.”
