Randy isn’t alone. Bella is with him.
His best friend, a young
woman, her skin pale, the circles under eyes aging her, is huddled behind him,
her bloodshot and weary eyes gazing over his shoulder.
She hasn’t handled the
game well. Who could?
Once we are together, we
receive the new list. One by one, not
all at once, our phones go off.
When I pull up the
message, the familiar ‘Unknown’ hovering over the sender bar, my breath catches
in my throat.
I’m not at the top of the
list. Not anymore.
Bella.
Dina.
Randy.
Luke.
Luke.
No knew name, but a new
order.
I respond. One word.
Why?
A ding, a response.
“The rules are mine to
break and bend. Enjoy your
extension.”
