The sunset’s glow bursts
over the horizon, and the barricades go up, hiding away our little town deep in
the bowels of the building.
I remain on the upper
levels, above ground. Shadows hide me
from the things that lurk, the things that rip and claw, the things that…
I duck back, the familiar
low growl turning by blood ice cold.
One of those things is
close.
A return growl.
Two of those things.
I glance over the edge of
the building, down the steep drop.
They are on the street,
watching the building.
A gentle nudge against
the barricade.
A harder push.
They want in.
I can swear that one of
those things… those monsters, looks up at me.
It smiles.
