My little city is dark,
and quiet.
The quiet scares me more.
How long had it
been?
How long had it taken me
to get down those stairs?
A minute? Two?
Already the screams were
silenced.
I light my lantern, but
keep the flame low.
I can hear them, those
things.
They slither through the
shadows.
My home, my little piece of
humanity, and the only family I have left, is on the other side of our little
city.
I move quickly,
quietly. Nothing stops me.
It doesn’t want to stop
me.
I think it wants me to
see.
I push back the curtain,
the door to my home.
I drop my lantern, the
flame goes out.
My scream breaks the
silence.
