I sat by Rita’s bedside,
her wounds now bandaged.
Her breathing was still
shallow, but it was steady.
The door to the bedroom
was cracked, and I could hear people talking in the living room.
“The rest of the village
is clear.”
That was Marcus’s voice.
“I thought you said this
place was protected.”
That was Doug.
“The barrier has been
getting weaker.”
Alana was there as well.
“This is the first time
anything has been able to get through, but… we’ve all sensed it.”
I tried to stand up, to
walk towards the door so that I could hear better, but a hand grasped my
forearm, stopping me.
“I have one more thing to
tell you.” Rita’s voice was weak. “This time we will not be interrupted. Get the others.”
