Alana, Marcus, Doug and
myself stood at Rita’s bedside.
Rita cleared her throat,
a small dribble of blood red spit passing her lips. When she spoke, everyone
listened.
“The barrier is a gift
given to us not just by the deities, but by a human, a host. If the barrier is
weakening, then so is the host.”
Rita paused to catch her
breath. Every time her chest rose as she
took in air she winced.
“You must find him, and
bring him back to me. Only then can the barrier be fully restored.”
“Where is he?”
Marcus knelt down by the
edge of the bed.
“He is north in the town
that was once called Crystal Lake. After…”
She paused, this time her
pain seeming to come from her memories, and not her wounds.
“He suffered a great
loss, and went into hiding. His parting
gift to New Eden was the barrier. You
must bring him here. You must bring Kurt
to me, or New Eden is doomed.”
Rita sat up, her bandaged
face inches from Marcus.
“Tonight was only a small
taste of what is to come if you let Kurt grow too weak.”
