I retreat back to my
room.
Even with the sun out,
the shadows still follow me.
They seem more solid now.
Their edges aren’t
blurred.
They’re more present.
I talk to one, because…
Well, because why
not?
I ask it for a name.
It just shakes its head.
I ask it how much longer
I have.
It shakes its head
again.
I ask it if it is
enjoying watching me suffer.
…
…
It nods.
I’m not surprised.
My exhaustion has finally
caught up to me, and I collapse onto my bed.
Not even the fear, the
anxiety, the worry, the terror can keep my eyes open.
I drift into a sleep that
I wished was dreamless.
For once, my wish was
granted.
